The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) price of oil, often a world reference price quoted in the media, averaged US$52.17 a barrel in December 2016, 39.8% higher than it was a year earlier. Western Canada Select (WCS), the price obtained for many Alberta producers for oil, was up from US$22.51 in December 2015 to US$37.18 in December 2016, a rise of 65.2%. Prices for WCS averaged US$29.48 in 2016, down 16.4% from 2015. The differential of WTI over WCS was US$14.99 in December 2016.
