Alberta's international merchandise exports were $8.0 billion in December 2016, 9.2% higher than the same period last year. Canadian exports decreased 1.2% over the same period. Energy products (which accounted for 70.0% of Alberta exports) increased by 14.5% year over year while industrial machinery declined 42.1%.
Alberta exports were $78.8 billion in 2016, a 14.8% decline from 2015. However, steep declines in the early months of 2016 were partially offset by stronger performance in the latter half of the year as the price of oil recovered somewhat.
