Urban housing starts decreased in Alberta from 1,453 in January 2016 to 1,129 in January 2016, a year-over-year decline of 22.3%. This is the lowest level of housing starts in Alberta in one month since May 2009. Canadian starts increased 27.0% over the same period. Single detached starts increased by 4.9% in Alberta and accounted for 58.5% of all housing starts in January. Apartment and row housing were both down substantially in January 2017, declining 60.7% and 61.1% compared to the same month a year earlier.
