Analysis

PUBLISHED - Sep 8, 2017

In July 2017, Alberta municipalities issued $1.03 billion in building permits, a decrease of 9.0% from July 2016. Nationally, building permits increased 12.4% over the same time period. In Alberta, residential permits increased in value (up 9.4%), while all other permit types fell. Industrial permits saw the largest decrease (-63.2%) compared to the same month last year. Because building permits are volatile, using year-to-date figures can be helpful. Between January and July of 2017, Alberta building permit values were down 2.8% compared to the same period one year earlier. This decline is in large measure due to a drop in both commercial (down 27.7% year to date).
