Average weekly earnings are derived by dividing total weekly earnings (including overtime earnings) by the number of employees. This data is compiled from the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours which is a business census of non-farm payroll employees.

Nationally, average weekly earnings were $979 in December, up 1.5% from the same period last year. Alberta's November average wage of $1,129 was ahead of the next highest province, Newfoundland and Labrador, at $1,038.
