Average weekly earnings are derived by dividing total weekly earnings (including overtime earnings) by the number of employees. This data is compiled from the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours which is a business census of non-farm payroll employees.

In April 2017, average weekly earnings in Alberta were $1,128, 0.3% higher than the same period in 2016. Nationally, average weekly earnings were $972 in April, up 1.8% from the same period last year. Alberta's April average wage of $1,128 was well ahead of the next highest province, Newfoundland and Labrador, at $1,034. April's increase breaks a string of 21 straight monthly year-over-year declines - not since June 2015 has Alberta's average earnings increased from the previous year.
